Chemical composition of cement in details and their functions

Chemical composition of Portland cement:-

Cement is a binding material which is majorly used in construction activities and it was first invented by joseph aspedin.

1) Lime(CaO) :-  60-67% 

Function:- It control the strength and soundness of cement and it should be in proper proportion because deficiency of lime reduces strength and increase setting of cement and excess of cement make it unsound, expand & disintigrate.

2) Silica(SiO2) :- 17-25%

Function:- It also Impart strength to the cement and excess in quantity increses strength and setting time.

3)Alumina(Al2O3):- 3-8%

Function:- It imparts Quick setting property of cement and clinkering temperature is lowered by the presence of Alumina but excess in quantity reduces the strength of cement 

4)Iron Oxide(Fe2O3) :- 0.5-6%

Function:-It imparts reddish colour to the cement and help in fusion of different ingredients.

5) Magnesia(MgO):- 0.1-4%

Function:- It imaparts colour and hardness to the cememt ad also impart yellowish tint to the cement. excess of magnesia is harmful for the mortar and concrete because it cause cracking in mortar and cement and create unsoundness in it.

NOTE:- Apart from These Quantities calcium sulphate, sulphur and alkalies are also present in slight proportions
